Christmas time is board game time

Strategic qualities come in handy during the holiday season too - when the traditional family board game takes center stage in a festively adorned room. Find out which games our team members reach for the most.

Activity – Training for your laughing muscles

In “Activity”, individual players or teams compete to guess terms that a teammate explains through pantomime, drawing, or words. Players break a sweat trying to explain concepts like "final straw," draw " going to the polls," or act out an "usher," while the guessers’ misinterpretations often lead to fits of laughter. With cards available in different difficulty levels, the game is suitable for families with children aged 10 and older.

Brändi Dog – Cards instead of dice

“Trouble” reloaded. The key difference: in teams of two, you don’t move your pieces based on dice rolls but instead strategically use bridge cards. This minimizes the role of luck, allowing the super-strategist team to effortlessly defeat their amateur opponents. You intuitively understand each other and coordinate your moves perfectly. You’re in control, heading for a sure victory – until… the opponents swap pieces with a Jack, move backward to the “start” space with a 4, and wipe out all pieces in their path and send them home with a 7… Noooo!!

Der Palast von Alhambra – No pleasantries in Andalusia

The concept is simple: whoever builds the most magnificent palace with a limited budget wins. The game seems harmonious at first—until your fellow players repeatedly snag the building that would have fit perfectly into your palace. From then on, there’s no time for pleasantries. “Alhambra” is beautifully designed, perfectly balances strategy and luck, and lets me mentally escape to the Andalusian warmth even on dark winter days.

Gämsch – Das Nervenkitzelgedicht

A game that pops like a flash,
Welcome to the classic “Gämsch” bash!

A wink, a tap, a secret sign,
Your partner gets it – that’s the line!

Quick as lightning, the brain must churn,
No time to dawdle or take a turn.

The tension builds, the heart beats loud,
Who’ll be the king? Who’s disallowed?

“Double Gämsch!” echoes, pure suspense,
Pulse racing fast – adrenaline immense!

So crazy, so wild, with brains and wit,
A “Gämsch” match – better than any Netflix hit!

Just Dance – Swing your hips at home

For those who prefer to spend the evening comfortably at home but don’t want to just sit around, I recommend “Just Dance”. The Nintendo Switch game turns your living room into a mini dance floor where you can clumsily mimic the dance moves from popular songs on the screen. It gets everyone moving, brings good vibes, and often ends in laughter over everyone’s lack of coordination and rhythm.

Monopoly – Family duel deluxe

“Monopoly” is our all-time favorite – the only game my daughter still plays with us. At five, she was the bank’s CEO, counting money like a pro. Now it’s all about Schlossallee and Parkstrasse, piling on hotels and parking her Porsche in front of them. While I’m still thinking, “What a harmless game,” she has already taken my last penny. But hey, what is it all about? Spending time with the people we love. Merry Christmas and happy gaming!

Le Nez du Vin – A fragrant family game

Clove, violets, saffron, or pineapple – luckily, wine does not usually smell of rotten hay or faults like cork and glue, but of familiar aromas. “Le Nez du Vin” is great for training your sense of smell, but it’s also a great game for the whole family as it doesn’t require the consumption of alcohol. The goal is to identify 54 aromas. It’s not cheap, but it offers top-notch entertainment for all kinds of gatherings.

Ligretto – Ski camp at home

Liiigreetto STOP! The triumphant shout still echoes in my head, even though I haven’t played in ages. In “Ligretto”, all players simultaneously try to place their 40 cards in the center in ascending order by color. The first to finish wins. This card game takes me straight back to ski camp evenings and girls’ weekends. Hands whirl through the air, emotions boil over. Fast-paced, dynamic, competitive – exactly my thing!

Malefiz – Thrills to the end

Who has the strategy to block others effectively? “Malefiz” combines strategy, dice luck, and nerves of steel. Many paths lead to success, but finding the right one isn’t always easy. Just when you’re about to win, you start over from the bottom as your opponents pass you by. To win, you need both luck and well-executed tactical decisions. Until the last second, every scenario remains possible, and every dice roll can make the difference between victory and defeat.

Shithead – Endless fun anywhere

Whether at a café, by the lake, or on the couch—“Shithead” is the perfect card game for anywhere. With just a poker deck, it delivers an ideal mix of strategy, luck, and thrills. Just when victory seems within reach, the final move can turn everything upside down. And who’s left with the cards at the end? That’s right, the Shithead. This game guarantees endless fun and a touch of glee. I’m already looking forward to mulled wine and countless rounds of this classic during the holidays.

Tichu – Explosive and exotic

A touch of poker, a hint of “Skat”, but more explosive and exotic: “Tichu” is a card game where four players compete in pairs. The goal is to secure specific cards and be the first to reach 1,000 points before your opponents. Tactical moves, rare card combinations, bombs, and special cards – such as the Dragon, Phoenix, Dog, and Mah Jong – add unique depth to the game. With teamwork, bluffing, and perfect timing, “Tichu” becomes an exciting mix of strategy and luck.
