Geneva University Hospital: raising awareness in all parts of the country
HUG employs almost 12,000 people, including about 2000 doctors. The hospital group includes 8 hospitals, 2 clinics and 30 health centres spread throughout the canton. The origins of HUG date back to 1535. The most recent milestones were the opening of the laboratory and research building (BATLab) in 2015, the integration of the Joli-Mont and Crans-Montana clinics in 2016 and the opening of the Gustave-Julliard building in 2017. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Swiss Competence Centre for Children and Adolescents with Liver Disease CSFE. One of the CSFE's patients is now a doctor himself, his touching life story can be read here on pages 16 and 17, and the two directors of the institute introduce themselves here on pages 12 and 13.
At HUG, research is also being conducted into the future of personalised cancer treatment. The work of Pierre-Yves Dietrich is particularly noteworthy in this context. He and his team are working closely with the University of Heidelberg to develop effective treatments for particularly aggressive forms of brain tumors. Pierre-Yves Dietrich presented the "Bilanz" as a pioneer in its section for outstanding Swiss researchers. You can read his portrait here.
